Cardiovascular examinations are a major aspect of preventive care. Modern Heart and Vascular provides cardiovascular exams to give patients peace of mind and identify potential cardiac conditions before they cause serious harm.

Heart disease is one of the most common causes of death for adults in the U.S. Every year, millions of people suffer from the symptoms and complications associated with heart failure, heart attacks, arterial diseases and other conditions.

Preventive care is a proactive approach that aims to stop or slow the development of cardiovascular disease. The sooner your doctor detects a problem, the better the outcome can be. Early detection and intervention reduce your risk of serious complications. At Modern Heart and Vascular, we’re committed to helping our patients avoid excessive medication or unnecessary surgeries. Cardiovascular assessments allow doctors to efficiently identify, diagnose and begin treating a range of cardiac conditions.

Importance of Cardiovascular Assessments

At Modern Heart and Vascular, cardiovascular exams are an essential component of our preventive care strategy. If you are suffering from chest pain or other cardiac symptoms, a cardiovascular assessment can help determine the cause of the issue.

Doctors also use these exams to detect silent conditions. Many cardiovascular issues develop gradually over time — even years — such as plaque accumulation in your arteries. These conditions often don’t show symptoms until the situation is severe. Cardiovascular examinations allow your doctor to identify possible problems early on, monitor them over time and take action when necessary. With our heart specialists, routine visits can become life-saving assessments.

What a Cardiovascular Exam Looks Like

The cardiovascular assessment procedure can vary, but typically includes a broad assessment of the circulatory system, with a focus on the heart itself. Your doctor will examine your heart health through observation (looking), palpation (touching) and auscultation (listening). Before the cardio exam, doctors might take a family history or perform a general physical examination. This information can bring to light potential risk factors, genetic predispositions or other symptoms that could affect your heart.

During the assessment, your cardiologist will perform a series of observations and noninvasive tests. Your doctor’s cardiovascular examination checklist might include the following steps:

  • Assess vital signs: Your vitals might include your blood pressure, heart rate and rhythm, respiratory rate, temperature, weight and oxygen levels. These are all key indicators of overall heart health and any potential problems.
  • Take pulses: Your doctor will take the pulses of your carotid and peripheral arteries to assess the blood vessels’ symmetry, intensity and elasticity.
  • Observe veins: Looking for varicosities and other abnormalities in your veins can alert a healthcare provider to potential blood flow issues.
  • Inspect chest and lungs: Chest deformities and abnormal lung readings can signal problems like heart failure or congenital heart defects.
  • Examine abdomen and extremities: Your doctor will examine your abdomen, arms and legs for possible fluid buildup or other symptoms of poor blood flow, which might be a sign of heart trouble.
  • Perform cardiac auscultation: Your doctor can glean valuable information by listening for heart sounds, murmurs and rubs with a stethoscope.
